Eager to be Healthy—Mike Dyson, a health scare and faith, built a gym empire.
Jun 11
A Marine, a gym owner, and still not bulletproof. Mike Dyson built an Anytime Fitness franchise after years of walking through back pain. Then a double bypass hit him right when he looked healthy. If you have ever wondered how faith, fitness, and a hard past can share one life, this episode is for you.
Mike Dyson lives in Pensacola, Florida. Former Marine, about twelve years. Anytime Fitness franchise owner. He had five gyms. He sold two and kept three. Author of The Shadow. Four kids. Eleven grandkids.
The story starts with a health challenge in the early 2000s. Major lower back pain. Not a surgery candidate. In 2004, in a church service, he felt called to change his health. He started walking a treadmill every day in pain. Little by little he got better. That path led him into fitness as a business, not only as a hobby.
Before the gyms came the void. His father left before he was born. His mother nearly ended the pregnancy. A lonely childhood with a lot of empty space. Later he filled that void the usual ways people try. After he rededicated his life in 1993, the first thing he heard was to stop blaming. Forgiveness first. Keep your own heart clean. He asked his family to forgive him, reconciled with his stepdad, and eventually reconnected with his biological father before a freak accident took that second chance away.
Then came the scare that does not care how fit you look. In 2023, days before his sixty-third birthday, he had a minimally invasive double bypass. Eight weeks later he was back on the tennis court. Eight months later the emotional weight caught up. Fitness does not make you bulletproof. Faith does not erase the valley. It walks you through it.
His book, The Shadow, comes from Psalm 23 and Psalm 91. Not death as the whole story. The shadow of death. Presence in the dark places. Trauma, ministry, and the long work of healing what rejection started.
